To read or not to read

There are so many different books in this world. Books link us to our past. Without the books that we have now, we would not be able to know much about the past and be able to move forward. We would not be as advanced in technologies that we have now if it wasn’t for the books that people have written for us to use to learn from and develop. I by no means see myself as much of a reader, but ever since the start of this lit class I have been more open to reading. It is actually becoming more interesting for me to sit down and read a book. I am realizing how important reading really is. Reading is very important, especially because I am a college student and reading is always needed. I have realized that I need to read more, and it is helping me with my grades. I have seen an improvement ever since I have started reading more. There are many different kinds of books in this world. There are books for ever person; it doesn’t matter if you are interested in sports, cooking, fiction, nonfiction, or anything else you can think of. There is definitely a book for you. I think that it would be a very negative effect on people if books were completely gone.

I think that without the books that we have and the ones that authors will continue to write us as a society would suffer. We do have the internet and Google and different things, but technology always breaks. Books are pretty much not breakable. All you have to do is open a book and begin to read, you don’t have to log on or turn on a computer to do so. Even though we do have all this technology people always turn back to books to educate themselves. Books should be a huge part of everyone’s life.

If we continue to “burn books” our society will continue to decline. We cannot always rely on “Google it”.  I believe the reason why we are always relying on our technology is because we want everything to be faster, we everything to happen right now. We don’t want to take some time out of our “busy” schedules to do things the old fashioned way. It really is not that hard to sit down and read a book instead of sitting in front of our televisions or computers and watching Jersey Shore re runs. When you read it is a proven fact that people become more knowledgeable. With the help of reading you become smarter and have a wider vocabulary and learn the views of others instead of your own. I know that when I am older I am going to enjoy sitting down on my recliner after a hard day’s work and enjoying a nice book. Hopefully we don’t burn too many books by then.

  1. I completely agree with your statement that reading makes people more knowledgeable and helps them expand their vocabulary. To take that a step further, I find it impossible to truly form an educated opinion without first reading on a topic. People have leanings one way or the other on the issue, but they do not read in to the issues deeply enough to form an educated opinion. I define an educated opinion as being someone argument backed up by facts or some type of evidence. I think one of the reasons why teenagers are apathetic about the world and it's on-goings is because we don't read the fine print. We never see things for what they are because we are always just skimming the surface and judging problems by our own preconceived biases. Reading helps us to form opinions and explain our positions in an educated manor. Therefore, I see it as our civic duty to not simply vote, but to be educated, through reading, before we enter the polls.

  2. That's so exciting that you are starting to enjoy reading! And you are right we would be no where without books, life in itself would be so much different. We wouldn't have anything that we have now if we didn't have books. You're right we wouldn't have to technologies we have today because no one would have written it down to pass on to anyone else. Also with technology we don't have to worry about books freezing or losing the important information we needed. It'll always be just right in front of us.

  3. I think you made an important point that technology although great the majority of the time breaks down very frequently. Technology isn't always availabe if the power going out,if your computer crashes, or when you can't get internet the computer isn't an option. Therefore technology isn't always an option. Books however are always there. They don't crash, you can use them when the power is out, and you don't need the internet to get them. Books are the one resource that no matter what condition you can use when you get your hand on them. It is true there really are books for everybody out there that can connect to them in wayys other sources can't. If books no longer existed we would suffer intellectually and in other aspects.

  4. Like I said in someone else's response...it def. expands a person's knowledge and vocabulary by reading books often. But Like you said above, we can only rely on the internet so much. What if all computer's crashed or the internet went down. And when your not around wi-fi or around the computer, you will need a book. Also there are so many things on the internet that could be truly false. Someone could easily put information on there that is very false. So you have to make sure what you look up, that it is a reliable source.
